UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

The Sociology Department offers several undergraduate awards each May.  The Chittick, Riley, & Sauer Scholarships have been established by the families of long-time Professors of the department.  These awards both honor them and recognize the outstanding academic achievements of undergraduate students.  These scholarships are very competitive and are applied for in February of each year.  See this link for criteria.

TED LARSON MEMORIAL AWARD.  This award was established in 1965 by the family of Ted Larson, an alumnus of the Sociology Department of SDSU and a graduate assistant in Sociology at the time of his death.  Ted had compiled a most impressive record of academic achievement during his years at SDSU.  This award is given annually to the outstanding graduating senior in Sociology from SDSU on the basis of academic achievement as reflected in highest overall grade point average.

DOUGLAS CHITTICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.  This scholarship was established in the Fall of 1990 as a tribute to Professor Douglas Chittick, a member of the Department of Rural Sociology for 41 years.  This scholarship is given to a sophomore student who has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership while at the same time being self supporting through demonstrated employment.

MARVIN P. RILEY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD.  This award was established in memory of Dr. Marvin P. Riley, a professor of Sociology at SDSU for 34 years.  This award is given annually to the outstanding second semester junior in Sociology at SDSU on the basis of academic achievement and recommendations from faculty, both in and outside of the Sociology Department.

HOWARD M. SAUER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP.  This scholarship was made available through the generosity of the Howard Sauer Family.  Professor Sauer served as a faculty member and department head from 1938 until his retirement in 1973.  This scholarship is awarded to a senior Sociology major who has maintained a GPA of 3.0 or better, has demonstrated participation in extra-curricular activities and who has been judged by the faculty to show promise to the profession.

GROVE-LAW SOCIAL ACTION INTERNSHIP.  Betty Sheeks-Law, an SDSU alumna, has established a fund to encourage female students to pursue a challenging internship experience in a social action agency or non-profit organization. The internship is intended to reward and encourage someone with a passion for social action.

ALPHA KAPPA DELTA CERTIFICATES.  Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the International Sociology Honor Society.  It derives its name from "anthropon" (humankind), "katamanthanein" (to investigate thoroughly), and "diakonesein" (for the purpose of service).  When this phrase is translated freely, it expresses the goal of Alpha Kappa Delta:  To study humankind for the purpose of service.  In a very real sense, AKD promotes human welfare through the association of undergraduate and graduate students interested in developing scientific solutions to social problems.  Membership is awarded only to those college students who have achieved superior grades.

EXIT EXAM HONORS.  All graduating seniors from South Dakota State University are required to take an exit examination in their field of study.  The recipients of the Sociology Exit Exam Honors Awards are those whose performance was outstanding in these exams.  Certification in their specialty area will carry the "HONORS" designation.

For more information about these awards, contact Don Arwood, chair of the Scholarship Committee.

GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

WILLIAM E. AND HARRIET B. GOULD SCHOLARSHIP AWARD.  This award was established in 1980 by the William E. and Harriet B. Gould Foundation to encourage academic excellence and research.  The award is made to a graduate student in Sociology on the basis of an outstanding research proposal submitted to and judged by the faculty of the department.

ROBERT McNAMARA GRADUATE SCHOLAR AWARD.  This award was established in 1977 by Dr. Robert McNamara, a graduate of SDSU with a B.S. and M.S. in Sociology.  Dr. McNamara went on to distinguish himself as an outstanding contributor to the field.  The award is given annually to a graduate student in Sociology who has at least a 3.5 grade point average and who has submitted a scholarly paper to be judged in competition with others by the faculty of the department.

ROBERT T. & MARY K. WAGNER GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP.  The Robert T. and Mary K. Wagner Endowment has provided $1000 per year to be awarded to a graduate student pursuing a masters or doctorate degree in Sociology at South Dakota State University.  The scholarship is awarded to the applicant that has the most promise to the field of sociology and is actively involved in local, regional, or national sociological associations.
